The TI83/84 calculator displays long numbers with several digits, both large and small in value, in scientifc notation using an E. 52,000,000,000 is displayed as 5.2E10 which means the same as . Similarly, 0.00000000052 is 5.2E-10 or . To obtain the results shown below, input each number and then press the ENTER key.

When computation of numbers in scientific notation is desired, there is no need to convert to standard notation first. Numbers can be entered into the calculator using the E notation. There is a key for E. Locate the comma key key (immediately above the 7 key) and notice that it has an EE above it.

For example, to compute , enter (2.3, then press 2nd followed by the key to get the E, then enter 5 and the closing parenthesis. The result is shown in the first screen below. To enter the second number, enter (7.4, then press 2nd followed by the key to get the E, then enter 8 and the closing parenthesis, and press ENTER. The results are shown below in the second screen. Of course you can get the same results by pressing more keys and entering (2.3x10^5)(7.4x10^8). Both methods are shown in the final screen below. In either case the result is 1.702E14 or 170,200,000,000,000.
